History and Awards

Clue is based on the legendary murder-mystery board game of the same name. First created in 1943 by British designer Anthony E. Pratt, the game has been relaunched and refreshed a number of times. It’s now owned and produced by the American toy and game giant Hasbro. The goal is simple yet clever: uncover who committed the murder, in which room, and with what weapon. Each participant plays as one of six suspects and must strategically move through the mansion-themed board to find out the solution. As they go through the rooms, players gather clues from one another to solve the case.

Games magazine placed Clue in their Top 100 Games of 1980, calling it “still the classic detective game.” Their Top 100 Games of 1981 noted that “[the] characters in this 32-year-old game have become household words,” and in the Top 100 Games of 1982 they said, “Millions love this classic mystery game.” Its popularity exploded into a full blown franchise, with Cluedo branching into spinoff board games, novels, a movie, TV shows, and (you guessed it!) stage productions.

Paramount Pictures’ 1985 movie adaptation became an international sensation just like the game itself. The film’s screenplay was brought to the stage in 2017 by its original writer, Jonathan Lynn. It premiered at Bucks County Playhouse under the direction of Hunter Foster and starred Sally Struthers and Erin Dilly. In 2020, Sandy Rustin developed a new version that incorporated additional material from Hunter Foster. Her script was praised as “a welcome throwback to an era of physical comedy.” Fast forward to 2024 and Clue launched a nationwide tour directed by Casey Hushion, bringing the beloved mystery to live audiences across the country.
