This musical has pretty much broken any significant record set in the world of Broadway. The Lion King is currently the third longest running musical of all time and has sold over 18 million tickets in New York Alone. But the folks over at Disney Theatrical Productions didn’t just created a run-off-the-mill stage adaptation of a hit film. They brought in a monstrous team of visionaries and creatives that worked tirelessly to bring the magic of the silverscreen to the stage. Puppetry and mask innovations, authentic African music, intricate costumes, and top caliber casting made this mindblowing production into a reality. With the leadership and vision of director Julie Taymor and music from Tim Rice and Elton John, The Lion King certainly set the bar in visually and aurally stunning theatrical productions. 

THE PLOT

In the pridelands, the mandrill Rafiki calls on all the animals to gather at Pride Rock. The birth of prince Simba, a lion cub, is being celebrated. His parents King Simba and Queen Sarabi looked on with much happiness and pride. Prince Simba was to inherit the land but before that, he must grow up into a strong and honorable lion, much like his father. A lively young cub with a thirst for adventure, Simba likes to explore, but unfortunately curiosity got the better of him when he went beyond the boundaries of the Pridelands and ended up on hyena territory. The hornbill, Zazu, who’s also Simba’s baby sitter, warned the cubs against entering into the enemy’s lair. Will Simba’s adventurous nature and thirst for validation will bring this cub some trouble? AWARDS

The musical gained countless prestigious accolades the year it opened on Broadway. In 1998, the musical won six Tony Awards including Best Musical, Best Direction of a Musical, and Best Choreography. Creative designers also won the Tony Awards for Best Scenic Design, Best Costume Desgin, and Best Lighting Design. That same year, the musical won eight awards at the Drama Desk Awards, including Outstanding Director and Outstanding Choreography. In 1999, the musical opened in London’s West End and became an amazing contender at the prestigious Laurence Olivier Award. The musical ended up winning Best Theater Choreographer and Best Costume Design.  

THE CREATIVE TEAM

The team behind The Lion King musical is a magnificent force that brought the most visually and aurally masterpiece to the big stage. Director Julie Taymor was in charge in delivering this epic to Broadway and she was also the co visionary and co designer for the innovative puppetry works. Taymor collaborated with Michael Curry. Meanwhile, the book was written by Roger Allers and Irene Mechi bringing the magical storyline to the stage. Choreographer Garth Fagan brought much dynamism to the stage. Moreover, the music is also the spirit of this wonderful epic with music and lyrics by Elton John and Tim Rice with contributions from Lebo M., Hans Zimmer, Mark Mancina, and Kay Rifkin. Lastly, this amazing production is certainly the archetype of top notch entertainment with astounding work from Richard Hudson on scenic design, Donald Holder on lighting design, Michael Ward on hair and makeup, and Steve Canyon Kennedy on sound design.
