The musical adaptation, The Lion King entered the classical theater stage with a masterful approach; many state that the musical, ever since its debut, had transcended the traditional boundaries of theater and become more than a musical. With its execution and mix of dance, outfits and mainly 3D puppetry, the musical grew to a very unique performance compared to to many previous and future musicals. Because the narrative of this stage adaptation has animals as the characters, especially the future King Simba and his exile and eventual return to his home, the most difficult task for the crew was to make sure their adaptation paid homage to the original without appearing inauthentic. Julie Taymor, The Lion King's director, embraced this challenge and similarly embraced the skill of puppetry, masterfully utilizing 3D animal puppets for the Broadway play coupled with African-inspired design elements that upgraded the Broadway classic.

Today, The Lion King has surely earned its position as one of the most successful plays in the world, having won 6 Tony Awards including Best Musical. With two seasons across the world that have been performing for over a decade and counting and four other productions that have been performing for more than 20 years, the global musical resumes to entertain fans with its timeless story. It has always been met with standing ovations from both viewers and critics alike across its productions, while garnering endless awards and commendations, among many, NY Drama Critics Circle Awards and Helpmann Awards.

Since its stella in Minneapolis, Minnesota in July of 1997 and its following move to Broadway, New York in October of 1997, the musical has become boundless with its tours over several countries. Ever since its beginning in 1997, it has been holding seasons in several countries with both local North American and international performances, consisting of countries in Europe like Germany, United Kingdom, Spain, France and even Hong Kong, South Korea, Philippines, Taiwan and Singapore in Asia to name a few in a very extensive record of locations.

The exciting and coming run of Disney's The Lion King brings the North American Tour to Indiana and will be performing in Indianapolis at Murat theatre at Old National Centre on Sunday 18th October 2026 at 1:00 PM. The Lion King Touring Company features a large international ensemble cast with rotating principals performing beloved roles including Simba, Scar, Rafiki, Mufasa, Timon, Pumbaa and Zazu, with the show running approximately 2 hours 30 minutes with one intermission. This performance is part of a multi-week engagement running from September 30 through October 18, 2026. Theatergoers are expectedly excited, because Murat theater at Old National Centre, a historic and restored 1910 performing arts theater located at 502 N.
